United Way of Peel Region invests in eight youth led initiatives

MISSISSAUGA (January 14, 2016) – On Thursday, surrounded by family and friends, eight groups comprised of young, entrepreneurial leaders were awarded a Youth in Action grant.

Shelley White, President and CEO, United Way of Peel Region was on hand for the cheque ceremony. “Since the program’s inception I continue to be astonished by the wonderful projects these young people put forward.”

$15,000 was distributed to eight youth-led projects through this granting opportunity. “We believe by providing our young people opportunities to volunteer, develop new skills and create change in Peel; we are investing in the next generation.” says White.

“I’d like to thank the United Way and its generous donors who make this important initiative possible. We are empowering our young people to take the lead in making a better tomorrow.” said Shivi Gill, Young Leaders Council Chair and United Way of Peel Region Board of Directors member.

Youth in Action grants are a one-time granting opportunity focused on youth-led projects that offer creative youth-initiated ideas to address community issues in Peel Region. Youth between the ages of 14 and 24 are eligible to apply for this grant.

Youth in Action grants were developed in 2009 by United Way's Young Leaders Council, a group of volunteers aged 20 to 35 who are committed to creating a legacy of volunteerism and spirited giving within Peel Region.
