Regional Council Unanimously Votes to Invest in Community Door
PEEL REGION (February 19, 2015) – Peel Regional Council unanimously voted to invest up to $1,000,000 over two years in The Community Door – an organization designed to improve Peel residents’ access to social and community health supports through co-location and collaboration.
Winston Meyer, Board Chair of Community Door, presented to Regional Council outlining success to date. In the first phase, Community Doors have already improved accessibility and visibility of services, provided a platform for collaboration, economies of scale and better outcomes for Peel residents.
“This investment will support Community Door and partner social and community health agencies in reaching their full potential as an integrated social service delivery hub,” says Meyer. “Peel residents will have easier, coordinated access to the services they need – supports for employment, mental health, seniors, children and youth to name a few. This is a great opportunity."
United Way of Peel Region has been a strong partner of Community Door since its inception in 2008 – both as a member and as a partner. Initially, United Way of Peel Region brought the concept of a “Human Services Centre” to Peel. The concept had yet to flourish in Southern Ontario. Over a period of 18 months, the Community Door became a reality.
“I am so proud of the work we do with Community Door,” says Shelley White, President and CEO of United Way of Peel Region. “United Way is a catalyst for collaboration within the community, and when we see models such as the Community Door receive support from the Region, we know that our group efforts are working. It’s a wonderful day!”
Town Hall meetings with the agencies will take place in Brampton and Mississauga will follow in the coming weeks to discuss the next steps.
