United Way of Peel Region launches 2013 campaign and nourishes 8,000 Peel residents

MISSISSAUGA (September 13, 2013) – The classic tale of Stone Soup came to life today as over 700 United Way of Peel Region donors and volunteers kicked off the 2013 $13.3-million fundraising campaign.

Stone Soup is about three hungry travelers who encourage an entire village to work together to make a feast fit for a king. It starts with water and a stone, and slowly the soup builds into a healthy and hearty meal with everyone contributing an important ingredient. Stone Soup is an inspirational story about the strength people possess when they work together.

“One in seven people in Peel lives in poverty. We can all make a difference when we come together as a community, for our community,” says Dale Storey, vice-president of marketing at General Mills Canada and the 2013 campaign chair. “United Way creates sustainable poverty-reduction solutions right here in Peel. I’m involved and chairing this year’s campaign because I want to make an impact on the lives of those who are struggling in my own backyard.”

“Our research tells us the gaps in our community are growing…between the richest and poorest people, in the opportunities available, and in neighbourhoods doing well versus those that are falling behind,” says Shelley White, president and CEO of United Way. “In the true spirit of Stone Soup, it takes all of us working together to bridge the growing divides; to nourish our community and create opportunities for a better life for everyone in Brampton, Caledon and Mississauga.

Each attendee brought ingredients to the event to add to the sea of pots cooking 1600L of soup for the community. They chopped, they diced and they peeled. The soup is being distributed to 16 United Way-agency partners for sharing with their clients. This volume of soup is expected to feed almost 8,000 people.

The Guinness Book of World Records will confirm if “having the most people making soup at one time” will be broken in the next six to eight weeks.
