United Way of Peel Region’s Young Leaders Council awards $15,000 to youth projects through 2013/2014 Youth in Action Grants

MISSISSAUGA (December 2, 2013) – The Youth in Action Grant, an initiative funded by the United Way of Peel Region, has awarded $15,000 in grant money to 12 youth-led initiatives that focus on addressing community issues in the Peel Region.  The purpose of this Grant is to help motivate and encourage youth to take a leadership role in their community and inspire action and change. All applicants were between the ages of 14-24 and were awarded up to $2,000 to help fund their projects.

United Way marks International Youth Day with call for 2013/14 Youth in Action Grant applications

MISSISSAUGA (August 12, 2013) — In celebration of United Nation’s International Youth Day, United Way of Peel Region and its Young Leaders Council have put out a call for applications for the 2013/14 Youth in Action Grants.

From August 12th to October 11th, 2013, Brampton, Caledon and Mississauga youth ages 14-24 have the opportunity to submit applications for youth-led projects that align closely with one of the three areas in United Way’s investment strategy:  to move people from poverty to possibility; to help kids be all they can be; and to build strong communities. Each admissible project can be awarded a one-time grant of up to $2,000.

United Way of Peel Regions Says Thanks a Million to GE Canada and PepsiCo Canada

BRAMPTON (June 25, 2013) –Today, at its annual general meeting, United Way said thanks a million to two national campaign supporters with head offices in our region. GE Canada and PepsiCo Canada each raised more than $1-million in 2012 for the United Way movement across the country.

Thanks a Million is an honour United Way Centraide Canada bestows on Canada’s leading organizations that, together with their employees or members, have raised $1-million or more in support of United Way Centraide in a campaign year.

Neighbourhood green spaces get United Way volunteer TLC

MISSISSAUGA (May 24, 2013) – Over 400 donors and volunteers came together over two days for United Way of Peel Region’s 2013 Spring Day of Caring.™ Their mission: to invigorate green spaces in 12 neighbourhoods across Peel; those experiencing a growing concentration of poverty.

“We are focused on inspiring people to come together to make a lasting difference right here in our local community,” says Shelley White, CEO of United Way of Peel Region. “Our Day of Caring™ is a chance for our donors and volunteers to be engaged in hands-on projects that make a difference in the lives of people who are struggling. United Way of Peel Region launches more focused investment strategy

MISSISSAUGA (March 28, 2013) – Earlier today, United Way of Peel Region announced how it is investing the majority of the money raised in its 2012 campaign. Approximately $7.2-million will be distributed to programs, services and initiatives based in Peel.  This investment will support specific strategies to move people out of poverty, provide them with opportunities that lead to an improved quality of life and prevent people from falling into poverty.

United Way welcomes new fundraising chief

MISSISSAUGA (March 14, 2013) – Shelley White, President and CEO, United Way of Peel Region, is pleased to announce the appointment of Ania Kordiuk to the position of Chief Development Officer.

In her role, Kordiuk will assume responsibility for the strategic vision and leadership of all fundraising functions, including the annual campaign, major individual giving, planned giving and special gift initiatives. She will also provide leadership to the resource development staff and volunteers.

MISSISSAUGA (March 7, 2013) – In a celebration of youth achievement, United Way of Peel Region will be honouring students from across Peel who contributed to the annual United Way Campaign. This celebration will be held at Mississauga’s Sheridan College campus on Monday, March 18, 2013. The Youth Spirit Awards will recognize innovative and inspiring young people in Peel. The event will also feature a performance by Wali Shah – a local youth poet and member of the Mississauga Arts Council’s Limelight Association of Young Artists.

Power to the women of Peel

MISSISSAUGA (March 2, 2013) – More than 300 hundred people gathered in Mississauga to celebrate the women of Peel at United Way of Peel Region’s South Asian Advisory Council APNA Peel Gala Empowering our Women. The event was held at the Sagan Banquet and Convention Centre.

South Asian corporate leaders, public figures, visual artists, dancers and one very funny comedian from Brampton – all empowered women themselves – were featured at the event. No matter what their background or their calling, they are women who inspire others and provide hope.

United Way volunteers and donors celebrate $12,978,979 achievement

MISSISSAUGA (February 7, 2013) – Last September, United Way of Peel Region announced a $12.8-million goal and asked everyone living or working in Peel to give, volunteer and act in support of their local community, and create long-term social change.

Tonight, at the Living Arts Centre, more than 500 hundred United Way supporters and volunteers cheered and chanted “Change starts here” when it was announced their efforts helped to raise $12,978,979 during the 2012 campaign. This final total is 1.4 per cent higher than the original goal.

Brilliant stars gather to celebrate United Way’s 2012 campaign on February 7

MISSISSAUGA (January 31, 2013) – “Joan Rivers” will be very busy interviewing United Way of Peel Region’s brilliant campaign stars as they walk the red carpet at the 2012  Spirit Awards. This community achievement celebration will be held at the Living Arts Centre on Thursday, February 7, 2013. The awards show will celebrate United Way’s 2012 campaign and honour the support of hundreds of individuals and organizations from across Brampton, Caledon and Mississauga who gave, volunteered and acted to create opportunities for a better life for everyone living in Peel Region. United Way will present Spirit Awards for innovative and inspiring campaigns, and announce the campaign results. The event will also feature performances by Mississauga tenor Michael Ciufo, Youth in Action grant recipients Project One, and dancers from DLM Entertainment.

United Way’s South Asian Advisory Council event celebrates empowerment of women

MISSISSAUGA (January 31, 2013) – United Way of Peel Region’s South Asian Advisory Council will host its inaugural gala, APNA Peel Gala Empowering our Women, on Saturday, March 2, 2013. The event will take place at Sagan Banquet & Convention Centre 7180 Edwards Boulevard in Mississauga from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. Tickets can be purchased for $50 each.

The event will celebrate the empowerment of women, particularly in the South Asian community. It will also showcase accomplished and creative South Asian female artists through a visual art exhibit, auction, dance and vocal performances.

United Way and Region of Peel distribute $262,517 in grants for neighbourhood development projects

MISSISSAUGA (January 18, 2013) – The members of the Colonial Terrace /Forest Ridge, Springfield Gardens ‘Ladies First’ – Cooperative Social Enterprise are focused on making their neighbourhood stronger. The community empowerment program gives women a platform to socialize and build trust, to develop leadership skills and create a sense of belonging. They just needed some financial support to make it happen. So they applied for a Neighbourhood Development Grant funded jointly by United Way of Peel Region and Region of Peel. After being notified it will receive a $15,000, the ‘Ladies First’ – Cooperative Social Enterprise is ready to get to work.
