Spotlight on Dev

National Volunteer Week 2017

Dev Sarkar is Chair of the Allocations Committee. The Allocations Committee is a standing committee of the Board that works closely with the Community Investment Cabinet to develop and provide oversight to the annual citizen review process for the Community Priorities Fund.

Why do you volunteer?

Volunteering gives me an unique window to give something back to the community and make a difference to the people around me. Being a relatively new Canadian, it provides me an opportunity to better understand the Canadian social ecosystem, develop new skills of working through influence and build on my existing experience and knowledge.

How long have you been a volunteer?

I have been a volunteer for over five years. As a volunteer, it's important to give some time to an particular organization to maximize your contribution to your chosen cause and organization.

What motivates you to volunteer with United Way of Peel Region?

United Way has a clear strategy on how they want to make a difference to the community and hence their activities are focused to drive their strategic outcomes. As well, the role and the process of volunteering is fairly structured and that contributes to making volunteering a satisfying experience.

What does possibility mean to you?

To me, "possibility" is the journey to sustainable empowerment for those in poverty. It's a great optimistic message which is great for providing the message of encouragement and motivation that this segment of society needs.
