Spotlight on Josh

National Volunteer Week 2017

Josh Busuttil has experienced his share of trials and tribulations. Following a diagnosis of Tourette’s Syndrome and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder he continued to struggle with adversity. Depression took its toll on him. He was in a dark place when he enrolled in a United Way funded program at a Mississauga-based agency.

“It took a lot of hard work and faith as I fought through the dark times in my life, and have now come out the other side into the light,” says Josh. “I had to change my old habits to achieve this feeling of inner peace--a peace that I hope that everyone will one day also get to experience for themselves.”

The Heart of our Community

The Heart of our Community

103,680. No, I’m not talking about how much over the asking price a condo sold for in the last five minutes. That is the amount of times the average heart beats each day.

Volunteers are the heart that makes our beautiful communities thrive and grow. Here at United Way of Peel Region, we have the honour to work with over 1,300 volunteers who contributed over 6,000 volunteer hours last year. They commit their time, energy, resilience, their life to a cause they are passionate about… not because they have to… but because they want to. They want to create possibility for the over 200,000 individuals who have benefited from a United Way funded program in the last year.

Ask The Expert: How are health and poverty related?

Written by // Kwame McKenzie

1. Is there a connection between income and our health?

There’s a strong link between income and health. But, it’s not just about the amount of money you make and what you can buy, it’s what your whole life is like as a result, including where you live, work and the food that you eat. These factors—the social determinants of health—influence the health of individuals and even entire populations, putting vulnerable people at a higher risk of having poor physical and mental health and decreasing their life expectancy.
